Rudolf Von Slatin’in Sudan Kariyeri (1879-1914)

ÖzRudolf Von Slatin’in kariyeri aslen Avusturya-Macaristan vatandaşı olduğu halde Sudan’a seyahati esnasında karşılaştığı İngiliz sivil ve askeri yetkilileri sayesinde Mısır Hükümeti altında resmi görevler almasıyla başlamıştır. Viyana’dan 17 yaşında ayrılan R. Slatin iyi bir eğitim tahsiline sahip olmamasına rağmen çok genç yaşlarda Sudan’da önemli görevlere gelebilmiştir. R. Slatin’in bu görevlere gelmesinde o dönemin güçlü İngiliz Generali C. Gordon’un katkısı tartışılmaz bir gerçektir. R. Slatin’in Sudan kariyeri kaza müdürlüğünden vilayet valiliğine, 12 yıllık esaret döneminden Sudan Genel Müfettişliğine kadar inişli çıkışlı seyir izlemiştir. Özellikle 1896-1898 İngilizlerin Sudan’ı işgal yıllarında R. Slatin’in İngiliz-Mısır askeri gücünde aldığı önemli görevler onun tanınırlığını daha da artırmıştır. Sudan’ın iç bölgelerine ilerleyen İngiliz-Mısır ordusunda ön cephelerde yer alan R. Slatin bir zamanlar kendisini esaret altında tutan Halife ve onun komutanlarının yakalanması için verilen orduyu sevk eden kişi olmuştur. 1899’da Mehdi Devleti’nin ortadan kaldırılmasıyla başlayan İngiliz hâkimiyet döneminde Sudan’ı yeniden yapılandıran birkaç isimden birisi olmuştur. Sudan’ın modern tarihinde bir kırılma noktası denilebilecek “Mehdi Hareketi’ni” yakından gözlemleyen R. Slatin’in hikâyesi döneme ilişkin yapılacak çalışmalara yeni kapılar aralayacaktır.

Rudolf Von Slatin's Sudan Career (1879-1914)

AbstractAlthough Rudolf Von Slatin was originally an Austro-Hungarian citizen, he began his official duties under the Egyptian Government thanks to the British civil and military officials he encountered during his trip to Sudan. Rudolf Slatin, who left Vienna at the age of 17, did not have a good education, but was able to assume important duties in Sudan at a very young age. Rudolf Slatin's appointment to these positions was made possible thanks to the contributions of the powerful British General C. Gordon. Rudolf Slatin’s career in Sudan fluctuated from mudir to governor, from 12 years of captivity to General Inspectorate of Sudan. Especially during the years of the British invasion of Sudan from 1896 to 1898, Rudolf Slatin’s important duties in the Anglo-Egyptian military power increased his recognition even further. Rudolf Slatin was on the front lines of the Anglo-Egyptian army moving towards the interior of Sudan and Rudolf Slatin led the army, which tried to capture the Caliph and his commanders, who once kept him in captivity. He was one of the few who restructured Sudan during the period of British rule, which began in 1899 with the elimination of the Mahdi State. The story of Rudolf Slatin, who closely observes the Mahdi Movement, which can be called a breaking point in the modern history of Sudan, will open new doors to the studies to be made in the period.
