Katolik Toplum Öğretisi (Toplumsal Katolisizm)

Katolik toplum öğretisi ya da toplumsal Katolisizm, Papa XIII. Leo’nun 1891 yılında yayınlanan genelgesi Rerum novarum ile başlayıp genellikle papalık genelgeleri tarzında günümüze kadar devam eden bir külliyata atıf yapar. Roma Katolik Kilisesi’nin siyasal, sosyal ve ekonomik konulara ilişkin yaklaşımlarının ortaya konduğu ve yaklaşık yüz elli yıllık bir zaman dilimine yayılan bu genelgeler dizisinin odaklandığı konular ise, yayınlandıkları dönemin koşullarına bağlı olarak farklılık gösterir. Bu çalışma, Katolik toplum öğretisinin modern ya da Leocu olarak adlandırılan ve II. Vatikan Konsili (1962-1965) ile son bulan dönemine yoğunlaşmaktadır. Bu dönemde yayınlanan papalık genelgelerinin odak noktasını sanayileşmiş Batılı ülkelerdeki işçi sınıfının maruz bırakıldığı son derece olumsuz çalışma ve yaşam koşulları ile bu koşulların iyileştirilmesine yönelik çözüm önerileri oluşturur. Bu çözüm önerileri liberalizm ve kapitalizm ile sosyalizm eleştirileri temelinde şekillenir ve zamanla bu ideolojiler arasında bir orta yol bulma çabasına dönüşür. Başlangıçta sosyo-ekonomik bir temelden hareket eden toplumsal Katolisizm, giderek Katolik Kilisesi’nin hep düşmanca bir tavır sergilediği -demokrasi, insan hakları ve özgürlükler, sosyal adalet gibi- kimi modern ilke ve kurumlara uyum sağlama çabasına dönüşür. Bu dönüşüm son derece önemlidir. Zira Katolik Kilisesi böylelikle sadece çağa ayak uydurmakla kalmamış ama aynı zamanda çağdaş muhafazakâr düşüncenin şekillenmesine ve İkinci Dünya Savaşı’ndan sonra Batı Avrupa’nın siyasal yaşamına damgasını vuran Hıristiyan demokrasi hareketine de zemin hazırlamıştır.
