Ventilator-Induced Diaphragmatic Dysfunction: Pathogenesis, Diagnosis and New Therapeutics

The diaphragm is the main inspiratory muscle and the diaphragm function is of vital importance for optimalbreathing. Diaphragm dysfunction may accompany various systemic neuromuscular diseases and increase the risk ofdeath. Furthermore, the use of mechanical ventilation (MV) therapy leads to ventilator-induced diaphragmdysfunction (VIDD). Recently, VIDD has been shown to be associated with the severity of weaning from theventilator in most critical patients. This review summarizes the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of VIDD.
