Self-Compassion in Nursing
Self-compassion includes being emotionally supportive and understanding to oneself in difficult times, in cases ofmisbehaving, difficulties or weak moments. Being compassionate to yourself is to show yourself the kind of care, support and kindness that you show to your relatives when they have a hard time. In other words, self-compassion isthe healing of one's self with compassion. Self-compassion is one of the most essential characteristics that nursesshould have in helping individuals with health problems. Compassion is known to be effective in providing qualitynursing care to patients. However, it is not possible to offer compassionate care without compassion for yourself.Because being compassionate to yourself provides the psychological flexibility needed by nurses to help individualswith health problems and concerns. While nurses offer compassionate care for patients, they strive to meet highstandards and perfectionist expectations of professionalization. While perfectionism can cause stress and complicateworking life, it can also be useful in effectively fulfilling the expected tasks. The contradictory nature of self-compassionand perfectionism can cause some problems in nursing practice. A better understanding of self-compassion will helpto prevent these problems and improve the quality of care. Self-compassion is a concept that should be examinedwithin the context of nursing education since it is a new concept in nursing literature and it is related to psychologicalvariables affecting care. The purpose of this review; to explain the concept of self-compassion in nursing profession,to increase the level of knowledge about this issue and to create awareness.
