Clinical, bacteriological and echocardiographic evaluation of patients with infective endocarditis followed at the cardiology clinic of Türkiye Yüksek İhtisas Hospital between January 1990 and December 1995

This study constitutes the retrospective evalua¬tion of the microbiological and echocardiographic characteristics of cases with infective endocarditis seen at Türkiye Yüksek İhtisas Hospital within the last 5 years in an'attempt to provide a basis for com¬parison with other series. The mean age of the population which consis¬ted of 74 cases was considerably low (24.6 ± 12.3 years). The majority of the patients were male (male/female = 1.96). Rheumatic valvular disease was the underlying cardiac pathology in 66% of the cases. Congestive heart failure, total embolic episodes and mortality were more frequent among those with echocardiographically demonstrable car¬diac vegetations. The microbiological profile was considerably different from other series. Additionally, our population disclosed a higher rate of congestive heart failure compared to other series.
