Surgical treatment of pigmented villonodular synovitis

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a disorder of unknown etiology involving synovial proliferation of the joints, fascia, bursae, and tendon sheets. It generally affects a single joint, most commonly the knee, and occurs in two forms, local and diffuse. Local excision is the standard treatment. This retrospective report presents the surgical results of 21 patients diagnosed and treated for pigmented villonodular synovitis between May 1988-June 2000. Among the 21 patients in our series, only three (14.3%) had recurrences - two in the ankle and one in the hip.
