Al-Tankiziyya Madrasa in Jerusalem as a Model of the Administration and Endowments (Waqf) of Schools in the Mamluk Period (730 AH/1329 AD)

This study deals with the administration of the Madrasa Tankiziyya in Jerusalem and its waqf endowment as a model of waqf and madrasa administration during the Mamluk period (730/1329) through a discussion of three principle axes: The first introduces the endower (al- Amīr Tankiz) and the recipient of the endowment (the Madrasa Tankiziyya), the second takes up the endowments made by Tankiz to the Madrasa Tankiziyya as they appear in the Waqfiyya document (ḥujjat waqf) of the madrasa itself, in addition to other endowments recorded in the Sijills of the Jerusalem Shari ah Court, Ottoman TAPU records, and other historical sources. As for the third and final axis, it deals with the administration of the madrasa and its educational system through its residents and employees, including their rights and their obligations.
