Evaluation of Medical Consultations Forms of a Patient Group Admitted to the Dental Clinic of a University Hospital

Medical consultation is an exchange of view with other branches of medicine to regulate patients' diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of the consultation forms in a unit which gives a general dental treatment service. Materials and Methods: Retrospective analysis of 159 written consultation forms was performed. Ages, gender, consultation rate per branch, the proportion of additional caution were recorded during dental treatment and percent of systemic diseases diagnosed as a result of consultations have been examined. Results: Cardiology (29.6%) was the most consulted medical department and was followed by internal medicine (28.9%) and ear, nose and throat branches (10.7%). 55.3 % of the study population has needed additional measures for the fulfillment of dental treatments. According to our assessment, 16.35% of the patients with suspicious medical history were started to be monitored/treated according to their new diagnosis. Conclusion: Dental treatment of individuals with systemic diseases could encounter different risks. As a result of consultation with the relevant branches, the medical status of these individuals becomes obvious. This may affect the diagnosis and treatment process. Dentists may contribute seriously in the diagnosis of certain systemic diseases
