NEUROMYELITIS OPTICA

Nöromiyelitis optika (NMO) sinir sisteminde optik sinirlerin ve spinal kordun tutulumu ile karakterize idiyopatik inflamatuar demiyelinizan bir hastalıktır. Astrosit ayak çıkıntılarında bulunan bir su kanalı proteini olan aquaporin-4'e (AQP-4) karşı gelişen antikorlara bağlı meydana gelir. Seyirleri, prognozları ve tedavi yöntemlerinin farklı olması nedeni ile, NMO'yu multipl sklerozdan (MS) ve diğer demiyelinizan hastalıklardan ayırt etmek önemlidir.

NÖROMİYELİTİS OPTİKA

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an idiopathic inflammatory demyelinating disease characterized by involvement of the optic nerves and spinal cord. It is caused by antibodies that attack a protein water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP-4) in astrocytic foot processes. It is important to distinguish NMO from other demyelinating diseases and multiple sclerosis (MS) because they have different course,prognosis and management.
