EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS POST POSTPRANDIAL DISCOMFORT SYNDROME ON QUALITY OF LIFE IN EARLY TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the quality of life scores of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who had no complications, and healthy controls and to evaluate the effects of postprandial distress syndrome on quality of life. Material and methods This case control study included 59 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and age and sex-matched 92 healthy individuals without any systemic disease or drug use. Gender, age, height, weight, smoking, alcohol use and presence of postprandial distress syndrome were questioned. Quality of life of the patients was evaluated through the Short Form Health Scale Test (SF-12). SF-12 scores were assessed on two sub-components: Physical Component Score (PCS) showing physical functionality and Mental Component Score (MCS) showing mental area. Results: The patient group and control group were similar in terms of gender (p=0.430), age (p=0.857), smoking (p=0.807), and alcohol use (p=0.745). The mean body mass index (BMI) of the patient group was higher than the control group (p=0.001) and the incidence of postprandial distress syndrome (p=0.001) was higher in the patient group. While the mean PCS score of the patient group was lower in univariate analysis than in the control group (p=0.006), there was no difference between the patient group and the control group in multivariate analyzes. In multivariate analyzes, MCS scores were found to be lower in patients with high BMI and postprandial distress syndrome. Conclusion: In our study, quality of life was not decreased with presence of early period diabetes. The presence of postprandial distress syndrome and higher BMI had negative effects on quality of life.
