Interaction between cardiovascular disease and periodontal health

Coronary heart disease and stroke (constriction, blockage or hemorrhage of the cerebrovascular system) are the leading causes of death in the world. Atherosclerosis, a part of cardiovascular disease (CVD), is the major cause of death in developed countries. Although controlling conditions known as risk factors for CVD, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and smoking reduces mortality, CVD-related deaths are increasing. Apart from known risk factors, periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease that is widespread throughout the world, has been suggested to be one of the associated factor for CVD progress. The purpose of this review is to highlight the relationship between periodontal disease and CVD in the light of current literature, since periodontal disease is not adequately addressed and it is quite common in adults at risk for CVD
