Maternal serum AFP and hCG levels in preterm labor
Objective: To evaluate the relationship between preterm labor and third trimester maternal serum AFP, hCG levels. Materials and Methods: One hundred women who were 27-33 weeks pregnant were enrolled to this study between August 2002 - May 2003 at Zeynep Kamil Women and Children Research and Training Hospital. Fiftyone pregnant women who had the diagnosis of preterm labor were included in the study group and 49 healthy pregnants encompassed the control group. Maternal serum AFP, hCG, maternal age, parity and gestational week were analysed. Results: Maternal age was significantly lower in the preterm labor group compared to the control group(p=0.03) while parity and gestational week were statistically indifferent. Maternal serum AFP and hCG levels had shown no significant difference when compared between two groups (p=0.06 andp=0.170). Conclusions: Third trimester should be considered late in predicting the risk of preterm labor and we have found no relationship between the levels of maternal AFP, hCG and preterm labor in the third , trimester.
