Use of selamectin against Demodex aurati and Demodex criceti in a hamster

Demodex aurati and Demodex criceti were diagnosed in skin scrapings taken from the back of a male, cross-bred, seven month old hamster, which had slight itching and alopecia. To treat the infestation selamectin topical solution was applied spot-on at a dose of 6 mg/kg body weight (BW) directly to the skin in the shoulder region, between two scapulae. Fourteen and 30 days after selamectin application only D. aurati was present in skin scrapings. A second selamectin application was carried out at a dose rate of 12 mg/kg BW. D. aurati mites were against detected on days 14 and 30 post-treatment. In conclusion, the min. dose of 6 mg/kg of selamectin was capable of removing D. criceti whereas neither the min. nor the max. dose were effective against D. aurati. No adverse reactions were observed due to treatment.
