(Geriatrics and Plastic Surgery)
Today, due to benefits of modern medicine, significant increase has been achieved in expectancy. As a result, number of old people and life expectancy is increasing. Long living people want to enjoy social life and also to work actively in some professional business fields. Getting old is not a standard process. Physiological changes occur more or less. There is heterogeneity among old people. Every person should be considered individually. Old people carry the majority of load of illness. The complication and death ratio of the patient is disproportional; because, in this age group there are accompanying illnesses and decreases in physiological reserve. One third of the patients going to surgery also consist of this age group. The risk of surgery in patients with age over 65 is not more than young people if there are no accompanying illnesses. The only difference is that the recovery periods of old patients are generally longer and the results are not permanent as they are in young patients. As a result of increase in old people population, developments in anaesthetic methods and the increasing interest towards aesthetic surgery, there is a proportional increase in plastic surgeries made in geriatric age group. The plastic surgery operations made in geriatric age group are divided into 2 groups as reconstructive operations and aesthetic operations. Old people should be considered by taking the effects of aging into consideration rather than their chronological ages. With a proper pre-operative preparation, many plastic surgery operations can be made with reliance in geriatric age group and good results can be obtained.
