Yunanca “phobos” kelimesinden türetilen fobi, eklendiği kelimelere korku anlamı yüklemektedir. İslam ve fobi kelimelerinin birleşmesinden oluşan İslamofobi, İslam’a duyulan korkuyu nitelendirir. İslam’a ve akabinde Müslümanlara karşı gösterilen ön yargısal tutum ile beraberinde gelen dışlayıcı bir tavrı simgeler. İslamofobi, İslam’ı benimseyen topluluklara yönelik ayrımcılığı, düşmanlığı ve nefreti bünyesinde barındırmaktadır. 1980’li yıllardan itibaren ağırlık kazanmaya başlayan İslamofobi, 11 Eylül saldırılarından sonra giderek daha da derinleşmiş ve antisemitizm örneğinde olduğu gibi düşmanlığa sebebiyet vermiştir. Bu çalışmada, İslamofobi’nin oluşmasına zemin hazırlayan nedenler irdelenerek, Avrupa genelinde ve Almanya özelinde İslamofobi’nin 11 Eylül öncesi ve sonrasında gelişimi ile Almanya’da temeli atılan PEGİDA Hareketi’nin etki düzeyleri ve temelleri araştırılmıştır. Ayrıca gün geçtikçe yükselen İslam karşıtlığının, uluslararası boyutta nelere yol açtığı ve bu durumun o bölgede yaşayan Müslümanlar üzerindeki olumsuz etkisi incelemeye tabi tutulmuştur.

Derived from the Greek word “phobos,” phobia attaches the meaning of fear to the words to which it is added. Islamophobia, which is a combination of the words Islam and phobia, characterizes the fear of Islam. It symbolizes an exclusionary attitude that comes with the prejudiced attitude toward Islam and subsequently Muslims. Islamophobia includes discrimination, hostility, and hatred toward communities that embrace Islam. Islamophobia, which started to gain weight since the 1980s, gradually deepened after the September 11 attacks and caused hostility as in the example of anti-Semitism. In this study, the reasons that paved the way for the formation of Islamophobia were examined, the development of Islamophobia before and after September 11 in Europe and Germany in particular, and the effects of the PEGIDA Movement, whose foundation was laid in Germany. In addition, what the increasing anti-Islamism has caused on the international scale and the negative impact of this situation on the Muslims living in that region have been examined.
