Histological investigation on the effects of maternal alcohol consumption on the structure and development of the placenta in chronic alcoholic rats
In this study, histological and histometrical changes in the placentas' of Wistar Albino rats which were chronically exposed to ethanol before and throughout gestation were investigated. Sections of the placentas of ethanol threated rats collected on the 12 th, 18th and 21st days of pregnancy differed from the control and pair-fed groups with widened maternal blood channels filled with more blood corpuscules in the labyrinth zone. In the basal zone glycogen cells were increased as large ccysts, vacuolisation was visible in the throfoblastic cells and the number of giant cells was increased. Placental weight was increased in ethanol threated rats. The labyrinth and basal zones of the ethanol threated group were thicker but desidua basalis was thinner than either groups on the 12th day. On the 18th and 21st days the labyrinth and basal zones of the ethanol threated group were nearly same in size whereas desidua basalis was thinner than either groups. It is concluded that chronic alcohol consumption in rats result with the de-struction of placental structure and development and affect the placental metabolism negatively
