Serum Ca P Mg PTH and 25 OH D3 levels of 16 normally term born and breast fed infants and of their mothers have been investigated prospectively at the time of birth and at the 24th 48th 72th hours and on the seventhy day after birth Cord blood calcium levels of the infants were significantly higher than their mothers at the time of birth p lt;0 001 At the 48th hour postnatally Ca levels fell to the minumum level and later showed a gradual increase reaching normal levels at the end of the first week Cord blood Mg and P levels in infants were also significantly higher than their corresponding mothers p lt;0 001 Magnesium levels increased progressively during the postnatal period nbsp; In cord blood PTH levels are either undetectable or below the normal range whereas plasma calcium concentrations are high This suggests that hypercalcemia in the late fetal period suppresses fetal parathyroid glands In many newborns serum calcium dropped in the first 48 hours of life while PTH levels continued to be in the unmeasurable range Plasma PTH and calcium levels have correspondingly increased after the 48th hour Maternal and cord blood 25 OH D3 vitamin levels were lower than normal but they were correlated with each other r=0 852 p lt;0 001 No significant change of the low 25 OH D3 vitamin levels has been observed during the first postnatal week Key words: Newborn Calcium Phosphorus Magnesium Pth 25 Oh D3
