Bartonella vinsoni subsp.

Screening of Bartonella vinsoni subsp. berkhoffi in Sheltered Dogs in İstanbul by Blood Culture

Objective: Bartonella vinsoni subsp. berkhoffii which has zoonotic character may cause mainly endocarditis and other symptoms in dogs. This study was conducted to determine the existence of B.vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii in dogs living in the shelters of İstanbul city. Method: Blood samples taken from 100 dogs in three different shelters were inoculated on brain heart infusion agar BHI enriched with 5% rabbit blood plate and were incubated in microaerophilic environment. Bacteria growth was assessed according to growth time, colony morphology and biochemical characteristics. Results: Thirty one of the 100 blood culture sample taken cannot be evaluated because of the contamination. Bartonella spp. was unabled to generate at 69 samples which were taken for assessment. Conclusion: In this study, although the presence of B. vinsoni subsp. berkhoffii could not be determined in sheltered dogs of İstanbul, because of zoonotic potential of bacteria, further investigations are needed
