Polimeraz Zincir Reaksiyonu (PCR), rekombinant DNA teknolojisi ile birlikte gelişen, moleküler biyoloji ve genetik alanında sıklıkla kullanılan bir tekniktir. Bu teknik ile klonlamaya gerek kalmaksızın hedef DNA’nın çoğaltılması sağlanır. Virüsler, bakteriler, bazı mantar türleri insanda, hayvanlarda ve bitkilerde patojenite oluşturan çok önemli bir gruptur. Enfeksiyon hastalıklarında patojenlerin saptanmasında rutin olarak uygulanan PCR çeşitleri bulunmaktadır. Bunlar Nested-PCR, Real- Time PCR, Multipleks PCR, Kantitatif PCR, Touch Down PCR, Solid Phase PCR, ve Revers Transkripsiyon PCR’dır.
