A Proposal for the Use of Virtual Reality Applications in Tourism Guiding Lessons

In this study, the use of virtual reality technologies, which have developed rapidly in the last 10 years and started to be used intensively for educational purposes in various fields (medicine, history, art, music, geography, foreign language, sports, astronomy, aviation, etc.), has been discussed in the field of tourism guiding education. In the study, it was aimed to determine how virtual reality applications can be used in the field lessons of tourism guiding department and how virtual reality applications can be applied in these lessons with low cost and high efficiency. In line with this purpose, primary qualitative data obtained from expert opinions in June-July 2018 and secondary data obtained from market research conducted on the internet were considered. As a result of the research, it has been revealed that the content to be prepared for virtual reality-supported lessons is less costly than video if it is prepared with 360-degree photographs. However, it has been determined that virtual reality applications can be used in lessons with lower cost and higher efficiency if free ready-to-use content offered on the web is used. Based on the findings, a model proposal is presented for the application of virtual reality technologies in the field lessons of the tourism guiding department with low cost and high efficiency
