Parenting in the Digital Age: A Research On Child Audience and Violence on the Screen

Increasing internet use and screen time among children, who are considered more vulnerable to the effects of mass media, necessitated new evaluations in the field and strengthening of awareness on this issue. Although digitalization processes that closely affect the social sphere on a global scale and new digital spaces created in this field have various advantages, they pose risks for children. Nowadays, the use of mobile devices and mobile tracking are becoming increasingly common among children and occupy an important place in their daily lives; This has caused them to encounter violence in cinema, advertising and social media content more frequently. The involvement of parents in the process to manage children and their tendencies in the digital field has revealed the concept of digital parenting. Since the concept of digital parenting is new within the deep-rooted history of social sciences, it has been observed that there is no consensus in studies focusing on the field. In the study, which used a descriptive analysis method based on literature review, the findings of research on the effects of violence that children encounter on digital screens, how these elements can be prevented, and the ways digital parents manage their children's viewing activities were compiled. In addition to research in the field, suggestions from sociological organizations and health authorities were included, and all data obtained were interpreted by adopting a relational perspective. The aim of the study is to create a framework for digital parenting strategies and the effects of child viewers' exposure to violence in cinema, advertising and social media content.
