Turkey and the OIC: 1984-1992

This paper analyzes the intensification of Turkey's relations with theOrganization of Islamic Conference (OIC) in stages from 1984 to the present(Summer of 1992) from an historical perspective. What were the objectives Turkey expected to achieve from thisrelationship? What roles has Turkey assumed in the OIC to achieve them, and how consistent have these roles been with Turkey's alliance ties with theWest? To what degree, if any, have the Turks been able to achieve theseobjectives and what were the reasons for their successes and failures? Theseare the main questions that will be considered in this analysis. It is the hope of the author that the analysis that will be carried out inthis work, aside from exploring an important aspect of Turkey's relationswith the Islamic WorId, will also contribute to a realistic assessment of thecapacity Turkey is currently assumed to have by the West1, as a Westernoriented Islamic country, to play a stabilizing role in her increasingly volatileneighbourhood in the post-Cold War era.
