A rare cause of dementia: Fahr's disease

Fahr’s disease (FD) is a rare disorder where bilateral, almost symmetric, calcium and other mineral deposits occur in basal ganglia, cerebellar dentate nucleus and white matter. The clinical pattern is variable and may be associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms, seizures, cerebellar or extrapyramidal dysfunction and dementia. Also cases with FD may present without neurological abnormalities. FD is asssociated with various metabolic disorders especially with parathyroid disorders. In this paper a case of FD with psychiatric symptoms dementia and hypocalcemia due to iatrogenic hypoparathyroidism is presented.
