BARRIERS AND FACILITATORS IN DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by high blood sugar as a result of insufficient/absence of insulin in the body or not having the desired effect despite having enough insulin. Self-management is of great importance in achieving the desired glycemic control in diabetes. Identifying barriers in the management of diabetes is a critical step in achieving optimal health. The main barriers in diabetes selfmanagement are; lack of knowledge, beliefs and behaviors about diabetes, lack of resources, health problems, negative emotions and lack of support. Being aware of the problems faced by individuals with diabetes in self-management and supporting the patient in overcoming these problems is one of the basic roles of the diabetes nurse. The purpose of this review is to discuss the pillars and barriers in diabetes self-management. Studies show that diabetes selfmanagement trainings, which are made by being aware of the support and obstacles perceived by the patients, are more effective in diabetes selfmanagement.
