The effects of monoflament and multiflament PA netting twine on catch composition of the red mullet gillnets. Gillnets are passive fishing gears, that using for catching demersal, benthic and pelagic species in seas and in inland waters. Fishing with these nets are get in to the small scale fishing classification.Nylon (PA 6, monoflament) and (PA6.6, multiflament) fibres of the poliamid material are used to make trammel nets. Therefore, the most important difference of the gillnets which are made up of from these materials is the visibility of the nets under the water. Experiments were realized between September 2003 and May 2004 in the İzmir Bay. Gillnets which were used in this study has 36 mm meshsize, 35 meshes depth, and %41 hanging ratio. The twine thickness of monoflament gillnet was 0,20 mm and the multiflament’s was 210d/2. Totally 32 species were hunted in fishing operations. 16 species of hunts were commercial and 16 were noncommercial. The gillnets which were made up of monoflament was more effective than multiflament both catching efficiency and catch composition. But, because of the high discard percentage and difficulty during the repairing process of nets, commercial fishermen must not use the monofilament gillnets.
