Evaluation of Taste Changes in Lung Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy

Objective: This study was planned to evaluate the taste changes experienced by lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the chemotherapy unit of a training and research hospital in Istanbul between December 2020 and May 2021. Research data descriptive information form, Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS) was applied to evaluate the experienced taste change. Results: It was determined that 62.3% of the patients with lung cancer experienced taste changes, 68.6% did not receive information from health professionals about taste changes, 35.8% described the taste change as metallic taste, 35.8% ate cold food as a way of coping with the taste change. The mean decrease in basic tastes of the patients' CiTAS scale was 2.49±1.39; the mean of the discomfort sub-dimension and the mean of the parageusia and phantogeusia sub-dimensions were 2.48±1.35; the mean of the general taste change sub-dimension was determined as 2.49±1.36. Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that more than half of the patients with lung cancer who received chemotherapy experienced taste changes, they experienced changes in the taste sensation of moderate intensity and discomfort, and the taste change they described most was metallic taste. In line with these results, it is recommended that healthcare professionals be aware of the taste changes experienced by patients with lung cancer, evaluate and monitor their quality and severity, and take preventive and therapeutic interventions with an interdisciplinary approach when necessary.
