Giriş: Bu çalışmada İzmir, Bornova bölgesinde 15- 49 yaş grubu kadınlarda ortalama menarş yaşı saptanması hedeflenmiştir. Yöntem: İzmir ili Bornova ilçesinde 2003 yılında, ev halkı tespit çalışmaları sırasında, 15-49 yaş toplam 133 633 kadın saptanmış bu nüfus çalışmasında hedef nüfus olarak belirlenmiştir. Örneklem seçmeden tüm evrene ulaşılması, hedeflenerek, Bornova Sağlık Grup Başkanlığı’na bağlı bulunan tüm kadınlara, bire bir görüşme ile ebe-hemşireler tarafından, ilk adet gördüğü yaşı sorulmuştur. Veriler 15-49 yaş kadın kartına ve ev halkı tespit fişine işlenmiştir. Hedef nüfustan 4598 kişiye (yüzde 3,44) farklı nedenlerle ulaşılamamıştır. Anımsayamadığı için bilgi alınamayan kişi sayısı 7585 (yüzde 5,67) dir. Turner sendromlu bir kişinin hiç adet görmediği belirlenmiştir. Anımsayamayan ve Turner sendromlu olan toplam 7486 (yüzde 9,11) kişi ortalama menarş yaşı hesaplamasına alınmamıştır. Bu çalışmada, hedeflenen evrenin yüzde 90,89'una ulaşılmıştır. Bulgular: 121 449 kişide, ortalama menarş yaşı 13,3 ± 1,3 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Saptanan en erken menarş yaşı olan 9 yaşta menarş olan kadın sayısının 86 (yüzde 0,64), en geç menarş yaşı olan 21 yaşta menarş olan kadın sayısının 5 (yüzde 0,03) olduğu, menarş yaşı tepe değerinin yüzde 30,95 ile 13 yaş olduğu belirlenmiştir. Sonuç: 15-49 yaş grubu kadınlarda saptanan 13,3 ± 1,3 menarş yaşı, ülkemizde yürütülen çalışmalara örnek olabilecek bir referans değer olarak elde edilmiştir.

Introduction: The objective of this study was to determine the mean menarche age in the women population of 15-49 ages in the Bornova region of İzmir metropole. Material and methods: The total female population of ages 15-49 in Bornova town of İzmir province was 133 633 in 2003, according to the records of our health district center. The total 15-49 female population was accepted as the target population and all of the universe was planned to be accessed without selecting a sample population. All women of ages 15-49 years were interviewed face to face by nurses and midwives, inquiring about the age of first menstruation. The data were recorded on the family cards and 15-49 women's cards. Because of various causes, 4598 individuals of the target population could not be accessed (3,44%). The number of women who were unable to give information because of memory problems was 1585 (5,67%). A women diagnosed as Turner syndrome was found to have no menstruation at all. The ones who could not remember their menarche ages and the woman with the Turner syndrome (1486 persons and 9.11%) were not included in the calculations regarding menarche age. In this study, 90,89% of the target population was accessed. Results: The mean age of menarche in 121 449 women was found to be 13,3±1,3. The earliest menarche age was 9 years of age in 86 women (0,64%). The data on women with the latest menarche age of 21 years revealed five women, with a percentage of 0,03%. The mean. menarche age was 13 years of age (30,95 %). Conclusion: The menarche age of 13,3±1,3 determined in our study is suggested as a reference value for further studies to be conducted in our country.
