Media discourses on homosexuality and managing hetrosexism in Turkey

The main objectives of the study are to reveal the public images created through media discourses on homosexuality in Turkey, and to investigate the strategies used by homosexuals to deal with the problems they face in society. Methodologies used in this study are documentary analysis and qualitative interview techniques. Data used for exploring the perceptions of homosexuals about the media portrayal of homosexuality and their strategies for managing heterosexism are extracted from a research conducted by the authors in 2006, based on in-depth, face-to-face interviews with 15 self-identified homosexual university students. In order to reveal the media discourses of homosexuality, all the news items published in six daily newspapers in Turkey in 2006 have been analyzed for the present study. The analytical framework of the critical discourse analysis and the conceptual framework of British cultural studies on media research, such as misrepresentation, overrepresentation, and underrepresentation are used in the study.
