Projection of Jesus in the Talmudic Tradition

Talmud is a written form of an oral law system that emerged as a result of long term work by sages living in Palestine and Babylon from the beginning of the Middle Ages. It also passed throughout a definite historical period and developed in accordance with time and conditions. It should be noted that together with laws, other topics also are found in Talmud. Especially, material on Jesus and his identity underlie the main divergence between Judaism and Christianity. Main subject of this study is revealing and analyzing names given to Jesus and phrases expressed about him on the basis of the approach of Talmudic texts to him. In this regard, several chapters of the Babylonian Talmud, specially, Sanhedrin, Shabbath and Khagigah, where Jesus is mentioned with names as Yeshu, Ben Patira, Yeshu haNotzri and Ben Stada, have been studied and reasons of usage and meanings of these names have been researched. Besides, expressions and/or forms of address in regard to Jesus in the abovementioned chapters have been evaluated. Also, examples have been presented from the passages of the Talmud, which describes Mary - the mother of Jesus, who bore him illegitimately and protected him. Taking into consideration these points, it has been researched if the Talmudic literature can be a source for Jesus. This study is merely limited to the approach of the Talmud to Jesus.
