Covid-19 Pandemisinin Diş Hekimliği Öğrencilerinin Diş Hekimliğinde Uzmanlık EğitimineBakışlarına Olan Etkisi

Amaç: Bu çalışmada diş hekimliği öğrencilerinin COVID-19pandemisi sürecinde hastalık kapma korkularının kariyerplanları üzerine etkisi olup olmadığının ve yeni bir ana dal olarakaçılan Oral Patoloji dalını seçmeleri üzerine etkisinin olupolmayacağının araştırılması planlandı. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışmanın amacına yönelik olarak, dişhekimliği öğrencilerinin demografik bilgileri sorgulayan üçsorudan ve öğrencilerin yönelimlerini değerlendirmeyihedefleyen 9 sorudan oluşan bir anket hazırlandı. Anketinternet üzerinden üç faklı diş hekimliği fakültesindeki 967öğrenciye ulaştırıldı. Bulgular: Çalışmaya anket formunu eksiksiz dolduran 781öğrenci dahil edildi. Öğrencilerin % 87’si COVID-19 pandemisinedeniyle mesleklerini icra ederlerken eskiye kıyasla daha fazlabulaşıcı hastalık kapma korkusu yaşadıklarını belirttiler.Öğrencilerin % 77’si bir diş hekimliği dalında uzmanlık eğitimialmayı planlamaktaydı ve bulaşıcı hastalık kapma korkusuyaşayanların % 24’ünün, hastaları ile daha az yakın temastaolacakları bir uzmanlık dalı arayışında olduğu görüldü. Buöğrenciler arasında kadınların oranları anlamlı derecedeyüksekti (% 26 – % 15, p=0.002). COVID-19 pandemisinedeniyle bulaşıcı hastalık kapma korkusu yaşadığını bildirenöğrenciler arasında diş hekimliğinde uzmanlık dalı olarak OralPatolojiyi seçebileceğini belirten öğrencilerin oranı anlamlıdüzeyde yüksekti (p=0.021). Oral Patoloji dalını tercihedebilirim ve tercih etmem diyen öğrencilerin oral patolojiuzmanlık dalı hakkındaki bilgi düzeyleri bakımından anlamlı birfarklılık bulunamadı (p=0.161). Sonuç: COVID-19 enfeksiyonu ve bulaşıcı hastalık kapmakorkusu, diş hekimliği öğrencilerinin uzmanlık dalı seçimiüzerine etki eden faktörler arasındadır. Ayrıca, Oral Patolojiyiuzmanlık dalı olarak seçmeyi düşünen ve düşünmeyenöğrenciler arasında, bu uzmanlık dalı hakkındaki bilgi düzeyleribakımından fark bulunamamıştır. Bu da kaçınma eğilimlidavranışların diş hekimliğinde uzmanlık dalı seçimine etki edenfaktörler arasında yer aldığını düşündürmektedir.

The Effect of Covid-19 Pandemic on the Perspective of DentalUndergrad Students On Dental Specialty Education

Background: It was aimed to investigate whether dentistrystudents' fear of contracting a disease during the COVID-19pandemic process has an impact on their career plans andwhether it will have an impact on their choice of Oral Pathology,which has been announced as a new specialty branch of dentistry. Methods: A questionnaire was prepared for the purpose of thisstudy which composed of three questions about demographicinformation and nine questions aiming to evaluate students'orientations. The questionnaire was distributed online to 967students in three different dentistry faculties. Results: 781 students who filled out the questionnaire completelywere included in our study. 87% of the students stated that theyexperienced more fear of contracting an infectious disease whenthey were practicing their profession due to the COVID-19pandemic. 77% of the students were planning to receivespecialization training in dentistry, and it was found that 24% ofthose who had fear of contracting an infectious disease werelooking for a specialty branch in which they would have less closecontact with their patients. Among these students, the proportionof women was significantly higher (26% – 15%, p=0.002). Theproportion of students who stated that they could choose OralPathology as a specialty branch was significantly higher amongstudents who reported that they had fear of contracting aninfectious disease due to the COVID-19 pandemic (p=0.021).There was no significant difference between the students who saidthat they would prefer Oral Pathology as a specialty branch andthose who did not, in terms of their knowledge levels about oralpathology specialization. (p=0.161). Conclusion: COVID-19 infection and fear of contracting aninfectious disease are among the factors that affect dentistrystudents' choice of specialty. In addition, no difference could befound between the students who think about choosing OralPathology and those who do not, in terms of their knowledgelevels about this specialty branch. This suggests that avoidance prone behaviors may also be effective in their selection of aspecialty branch.
