Modern Müzikolojinin Doğuşu: Guıdo Adler’in “Müzikolojinin Kapsamı, Yöntemi ve Amacı” (1885) Başlıklı Makalesinin Çevirisi ve Tarihi-Analitik Açıklaması

Viyana’lı müzikolog Guido Adler (1855-1941) tarafından yazılan Umfang, Methode und Ziel der Musikwisseschaft” (Müzikolojinin Kapsamı, Yöntemi ve Amacı) başlıklı makale 1885 yılında “Vierteljahrsschrift für Musikwissenschaft” adlı dergide yayınlanmıştır. Guido Adler müzikolojik bir araştırmanın temel amaç ve araçlarını, bu disiplinin hangi alanları kapsadığı, hangi yöntemleri kullandığı ve hangi bilim dallarıyla ilişki içinde olduğunu detaylı biçimde açıklamaktadır. Müzikolojinin kendi problemlerine yönelen ilk kapsamlı çalışma olması nedeniyle müzikolojinin modern bir bilim dalı halini aldığı süreçte, söz konusu disiplinin kurucu çalışmalarından birisi olarak oldukça önemli görülmüştür. Makalenin İngilizce çevirisi Erica Mugglestone tarafından yapılarak, Cambridge University Press tarafından “The Scope, Method, And Aim Of Musicology: An English Translation with an Historico-Analytical Commentary” başlığı ile “Yearbook for Traditional Music” adlı derginin 1981 tarihli 13. sayısında yayınlanmıştır.

THE BIRTH OF MODERN MUSICOLOGY: A TRANSLATION AND HISTORICO-ANALYTICAL EXPLANATION OF GUIDO ADLER'S ARTICLE TITLED "THE SCOPE, METHOD AND AIM OF MUSICOLOGY" (1885)

The article entitled Umfang, Methode und Ziel der Musikwisseschaft (The Scope, Method and Aim of Musicology), written by the Viennese musicologist Guido Adler (1855-1941), was published in the journal “Vierteljahrsschrift für Musikwissenschaft” in 1885. Guido Adler explains in detail the main purposes and instruments of musicological research, which fields this discipline covers, which methods it uses, and which branches of science it is related to. Since the article is the first comprehensive study of musicology that addresses its own problems, it was considered very important as one of the founding works of the discipline in the process when musicology became a modern scientific field. The English translation of this article was made by Erica Mugglestone and published by Cambridge University Press in the 13th issue of "Yearbook for Traditional Music", 1981, with the title "The Scope, Method, And Aim Of Musicology: An English Translation with an Historico-Analytical Commentary". In this study, it is aimed to bring this historically important article to the Turkish musicology literature by presenting a full translation of Guido Adler's article and Erica Mugglestone's explanations.
