Evaluation of the Factors Effecting Weeks of Gestation, Type of Labor, Birth Weight, Height and Anomalies of the Babies Delivered in the Tokat Karşıyaka
The basis of baby health lies upon prenatal period. The health of the baby is influenced by so many factors from the beginning of the pregnancy. This study is made in order to investigate the factors that influence weeks of gestation, type of labor, birth weıght, height and anomalies of the babies who were born in Tokat Karşıyaka Maternity and Children Hospital. In this research, 721 babies born within the last four months of 2002 and their mothers are included. The data related to babies is obtained from hospital registers whereas the data related to their parents was obtained through face to face interviews and their responses to the questionnaire that consists of 47 items. According to One-Way Anova and Student t Tests; It was found that babies’s height and weight were influencid by the age, education, occupation and height of the mother. Mother health-care, being exposed to psycological trauma, weight-gain, illness of mother during pregnancy affected the weight and height of the baybies significantly. In addition, Kinship state of couples, education of the father, residency of parents, presence of health-care center close to their residence and having health insurance also influenced the baby’s birth weight and height significantly. On the other hand, effect of smoking during pregnancy did not have significant effect on baby’ birth weight and height. Kinship state of couple (2.6 %) and exposure of the mother to psycological trauma during pregnancy (3.4 %) had a statisticaly significant effect on baby having anomally at birth. Begining of healthy life for a babies closely related to mother’s health during pregnancy. This fact requires active performance of Safe Moterhood Programme. Moreover, as there are more than one factors that provide baby with a healthy life, fundamental factors should be chosen and investigations should be performed on them
