PHYSIOTHERAPY AND REHABILITATION APPROACHES TO CHEWING DISORDERS IN CHILDREN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY

Chewing disorders negatively affect the nutritional and neurodevelopmental status of children with Cerebral Palsy (CP), as well as the quality of life of both the child and the family. Therefore, chewing function in children with CP should be evaluated early, and appropriate interventions should be applied. Chewing disorders management requires a multidisciplinary team and physiotherapists are an essential part of this team. As a result of this review, it has been found that the outcome measures used in the evaluation of chewing function in CP children with chewing disorders included great differences, and rehabilitation included multi-component interventions. There is a need for holistic studies based on concepts within the framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health for the management of chewing disorders in children with CP.
