Evaluation of the Effects of Periostin on Periodontal Tissues

Periostin, a protein necessary for the integrity and maintenance of periodontal tissues; produced in collagen-rich connective tissues such as periodontal ligament (PDL), skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, tendons, skin, and alveolar bone. Based on structures where it is localized, the biological functions of the periostin have also been investigated in areas such as cardiovascular disorders and oncology. The periostin, which is highly secreted from the periodontal ligament, plays a critical role in the integrity of the periodontal tissues and in the development of teeth and bones. In addition that periostin is an effective protein in wound healing in periodontal tissues and preserving the integrity of periodontal tissues, and it leads the migration, adhesion, differentiation and intercellular connections of cells. In this review, it is aimed to evaluate the various functions of periostin on periodontal tissues.
