ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND FEMALE LABOR FORCE PARTICIPATION: A REEXAMINATION OF THE U HYPOTHESIS FOR TURKEY

It is claimed that female labor force participation falls at the early stages of economic development and subsequently increases at the later stages. In other words, there is a U-shaped relationship between economic development and female labor force participation. The result of the previous empirical analysis for Turkey asserts that this relationship is valid for Turkey. However, due to the shortcomings of the econometric method and the data set used in the study, the obtained empirical findings are controversial. Our study aims to reanalyze the validity of the U hypothesis for Turkey with the current large data set. By using the panel econometrics, the validity of this hypothesis is tested at the NUTS-2 level for the period 2004-2014. While the obtained empirical results do not support the U hypothesis, it asserts that this relation is an inverted U-shaped for Turkey.
