THE TIMES’A GÖRE CESNOLA KARDEŞLERİN KIBRIS’TAKİ ARKEOLOJİK KAZI FAALİYETLERİ

Özet Luigi Palma di Cesnola ve kardeşi Alessandro Palma di Cesnola Avrupa ve Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nde pek çok askeri ve siyasi görevlerde bulunmuşlardır. Kıbrıs’ta Amerikan Konsüllüğünde görevde bulundukları süre boyunca çalıştıkları alanlarda Akdeniz’in antik kültürüne dair elde ettikleri bulguları Avrupa ve ABD’deki müzelere sunmuşlardır. Kıbrıs’ta yaptıkları bu kazı çalışmaları Avrupa ve ABD’de yankı uyandırmıştır. British Museum, Metropolitan Müzesi gibi büyük müzelerin bu parçaları satın alma süreçleri ve hükümetlerin bu koleksiyonların satın alınmasına dair yaklaşımları da basında, özellikle The Times’da yer bulmuştur. Çalışmada Cesnola kardeşlerin arkeolojik kazı çalışmaları ile ilgili The Times arşivindeki makaleler incelenerek, gazetede yer alan, Cesnola kardeşlerin faaliyetlerine dair farklı yaklaşımlara yer verilecektir. Ayrıca ilk bölümde biyografileri incelenen Cesnola kardeşlerle ilgili bu makaleler ve yazışmalar, sadece arkeolojik bulguların içerikleri ve tarihsel değerleri değil, kurdukları ticari-politik ağı irdelemesi açısından da önem teşkil etmektedir. Abstract Luigi Palma di Cesnola and his brother Alessandro Palma di Cesnola were appointed to various military and political posts in Europe and the United States. During their term at the American Consulate in Cyprus, they presented their findings on the ancient culture of the Mediterranean to museums in Europe and the USA. The excavations they carried out in Cyprus had echoes in Europe and the USA. The purchasing processes of museums such as the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the approach of governments to the purchase of these collections were also covered in the press, especially The Times. In the study, the articles in The Times archive about the Cesnola brothers’ archaeological excavations will be examined, and different approaches to the Cesnola brothers’ activities and discussions in the newspaper will also be included. In addition, these articles and correspondence about the Cesnola brothers, whose biographies are examined in the first part, are important not only in terms of the content and historical values of the archaeological findings, but also in terms of examining the commercial-political network they have established.
