An investigation of zinc and copper levels in hair of patients with Behçet's disease

This study was achieved with the purpose to determine the distribution of trace elements in hair of persons who suffer from Behçet disease. The study was organized in two groups as one control (n=30) and other Behçet disease (n=50) group. Trace element concentrations in hair samples in control and Behçet disease groups were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Hair zinc and copper concentrations of Behçet disease and control groups were found as follows: 155,0+22,0 ug/dl, 7,63±4,1 ug/dl and 190,0±32,8ug/dl, 6,26±2,7 ug/dl. The data obtained from the study shows that; hair zinc concentration in Behçet disease was significantly lower than control group values (p<0,001) and hair copper concentration in Behçet disease group was found significantly higher than control group values (p<0,05). Hair have been found to be very useful in the study of trace elements accumulation and values in the body, because hair is keratinized tissue with low metabolic turnover. We think that the analysis of trace elements levels such as zinc and copper in hair of Behçet disease may be useful in the evaluation of treatment and progression of disease.
