Understanding intra-firm adaptation processes of management fashions: Actors, fashion interaction and peripheral position

The study aims to understand the intra-firm adaptation processes of four different management fashions, namely Total Quality Management, Six Sigma, Lean Production and Balanced Scorecard in Turkey. It further focuses on how actors involved in the adaptation process become aware of new fashions and adapt multiple fashions simultaneously. Regarding the search and awareness phase of a management fashion, demand driven factors, or specifically firms' direct ties to business groups or multinational corporations, are found to be more decisive in the Turkish context. Besides, some firms are found to creatively bundle multiple fashions in synthetic tools, processes and roles, whereas others segregate fashions in different departmental roles and activities, temporally emphasizing one or more over others.
