Consumer piracy within the scope of consumer ethics: A suggestion of social cognitive model

It can be observed that there are problems and dissonances between consumers' and other stakeholders' ethical judgments related to acquiring pirated and counterfeit products. Authors argue that these problems and dissonances are rooted in the ill-fitted conceptualizations, overlapping pirated product-counterfeit product classifications and lack of common positive background in literature. This conceptual paper aims to conceptualize "piracy consumption" as an umbrella construct that encompasses consumers' intellectual property right infringing behaviors and suggests a positive general model that may provide solid background for future ethics and consumer studies. "Piracy consumption" is defined as "end-benefiting from operant resources without permission of ownerships of these resources". Based on Hunt-Vitell Theory and social cognitive approach, this study also suggests general ethical model that define three interrelated general processes: (1) macro processes that encompass value systems, subcultural systems and situational factors that related with intellectual property. (2) cognitive processes that contain deontological and teleological formation of ethical judgments related to piracy consumption, and (3) behavioral processes that contain two forms of piracy consumption: acquiring and using.
