A Study on the Genetic Literacy Levels of Prospective Teachers

This study aims at determining and comparing the genetic literacy levels of prospective teachers who study at different programs. The sample of the study consists of totally 162 prospective teachers studying at science teaching, biology, classroom teaching, and preschool teaching. “Genetics Literacy” survey was used as a data gathering tool for the research in which screening model was used. The point averages that prospective students got from the genetics literacy survey were investigated with ANOVA test and it was found out that there was a significant difference only between the points of prospective teachers who study at biology and science teaching. The difference between the prospective teachers’ average points that they got from the subfactors of the survey was analyzed with MANOVA test according to the programs that they study. It was determined that although there are significant differences between genetic material, transmission, expression of genes, and society sub-factors, there wasn’t found any significant difference between evolution and gene regulation factors. Considering the research results, the features of basic conceptions on genetics, their relations within each other and genetics importance for living being should be presented to prospective teachers in associated with current issues. By this way, efficiency of learning can be increased as well as the students’ increasing interest towards genetics subjects in teaching-learning environment
