V. S. NAIPAUL’UN NEHRİN DÖNEMECİ ADLI ESERİNDE TARİH VE UZAM

V. S. Naipaul’ün Nehrin Dönemeci adlı romanı sömürgeciliği deneyimledikten sonra bağımsızlığını kazanan, adı net bir biçimde belirtilmeyen bir ülkenin bağımsızlık sonrası siyasal, ekonomik ve kültürel yapısına odaklanır. Romanda öyküsü anlatılan ülkenin adının verilmemesi romana uzamsal bağlamda alegorik bir nitelik kazandırmaktadır. Naipaul bağımsızlık sonrası dönemde kolonileştirilme geçmişi olan hemen her ülkenin aşağı yukarı aynı süreçlerden geçtiğini anlatmak istiyor gibidir. Roman bağlamsal olarak sömürgecilik sonrası döneme ait ülkelerin genel durumuna işaret eden, özünde alegorik bir algıya gönderme yapmaktadır. Anlatı yalnızca Afrika kıtasının ortasına net olmayan göndermeler yapar. Roman tarihe, mekâna ve zamana yönelik özel ilgisiyle dikkat çekmektedir. Özellikle romanın başkişisi olan Salim’in ve başkalarının dilinden aktarılan tarih ve uzamla bağlantılı yorumların yanı sıra anlatının bizzat kendisi yaşanmışlık deneyimini tarih ve uzamın zaman zaman değişken algılarıyla birlikte okuyucuya sunmaktadır.

A Bend in the River by V. S. Naipaul focuses on political, economic and cultural structure of an unnamed country which has gained independence after experiencing colonialism. The fact that the name of the country is ungiven helps the novel have an allegorical aspect. The author wants to emphasize the fact that almost all countries with an experience of colonization have passed through similar processes in the independence years. The narrative makes implicit references to central Africa. Moreover, this novel is remarkable in that it has a special interest in history, place and space. In addition to the comments by the central character Salim and others on history and space, the narrative itself offers the experience of livedness to the reader together with changing perceptions of history and space.
