The Effects of the Romanian-Turkish Cultural Interaction on the Romanian Language

In the course of history, very few European Countries had to deal with foreign powers as much as Romania. As a result of the influence of different nations and the dominant forces changing hands from time to time, the society became influenced by a variety of civilizations. From this perspective, the existence of the Ottoman Empire in the region for almost 500 years inevitably left social and cultural traces. However this interaction didn’t take place one-sidedly, but just like the dominant state effect the region, they too got influenced from the opposing side. In the near past the Turks who migrated into Germany took with them a product of their food culture; “the doner”. This new product attracted the interest of German and led to the formation of a new sector therefore the word “doner” is now added to the German language. In the same way the Ottoman Empire got influenced by the territory it dominated. The Ottoman language too being influenced by other languages such as Persian and Arabic allowed new words to be added in the language. Moreover, these different cultures have influenced each other, and this has led to changes in their traditions and cultural values. As a result of living together for centuries, as in Romania, different communities especially between the Romanian and the Turkish nations obtained similar cultural values and thus this had influences on the spoken language which we will discuss. These cultural convergences and marriages that took place in time led to physiognomic similarities. In our study, we will discuss the contribution and the axiological implications of the Ottoman culture and especially its language on the shaping of the contemporary Romanian culture. In addition to the fact that the language spoken being a tool for mutual agreement it is also evident that it affects the way we perceive the world around us and our values. Another issue that ought to be emphasized is the presence of words with Ottoman roots that we can find in the Romanian language and their uses. The cultural and historical factors that influenced the transfer of these words into the Romanian language will be thoroughly assessed.
