Food Addiction in Bariatric Surgery Candidates and People Undergoing Surgery as a Form of Violence

Studies emphasize that excessive consumption of processed foods containing sugar, fat and additives can lead to addictive behavior, as well as negative changes in eating behavior can cause preventable health problems such as obesity. With the increase of obesity, besides various treatment methods, bariatric surgery has also gained importance and the prevalence of food addiction has been found to be high in people who want bariatric surgery. While people gain weight by eating too much, they also try to get rid of these weights with diets and surgical procedures. Before realizing it, they actually use violence by making excessive burden on the body and then having surgical procedures to get rid of these weights. In this review study, it is aimed to review the researches about food addiction status in surgical candidates who have undergone bariatric surgery and to evaluate the data obtained. 1974 studies published on the subject between 2009-2019 were examined, and a total of 23 studies in compliance with the inclusion criteria constituted the scope of the study. After the literature review, it was observed that the prevalence of food addiction in obese individuals is high, food addiction is not affected by factors such as substance use disorder, age, and gender, but food addiction can lead to psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, binge eating disorders, anxiety and anxiety. Food addiction leads to psychiatric disorders. Therefore, it may be recommended to identify individuals with food addiction and to provide additional psychosocial support to these individuals by consultation-liaison psychiatric nurses.
