Farmakon terimi eski Yunan’da kullanılan ilaç, zehir ve büyü anlamlarına gelen karma bir kavramdır. İlaçlar tedavi edici etkileri için kullanılır ve tarihsel olarak pozitif bir çağrışıma sahiptir. Ancak, tüm ilaçlar istenmeyen etkilere de sahiptir. Bu istenmeyen etkiler ilacın yan etkisi veya advers etkisi olabileceği gibi suistimal edilen psikotropik etkisi şeklinde de karşımıza çıkabilir. Tarihsel olarak bakıldığında mitolojide, Odisey’de geçen Tepegöz’ün şarapla uyutulması veya Odiseus’un Kirke’nin şarabından kendisini koruması gibi sahnelerde olduğu gibi, bazı psikotropik etkilerin sihir/büyü kavramının gelişimine katkıda bulunduğu görülmektedir. Diğer taraftan, Oliver Wendell Holmes’in Materia Medica’ya ithafen söylediği “Eğer dünyadaki bütün ilaçlar denize atılsaydı tüm insanlık için daha iyi ve tüm balıklar için daha kötü olurdu,” sözü de ilaçların zararlı etkilerine dikkati çekmektedir. Günümüzde her ne kadar ilacın tedavi edici etkileri üzerinde durulsa da ilacın istenmeyen ve zararlı etkilerinin belirlenmesi ve önlenmesi ile uğraşan farmakovijilansın gelişimi ile birlikte ilaçların advers etkileri de ön plana çıkmaya başlamıştır. Farmakovijilans, “ilacın zararlı etkilerine karşı uyanık olmak”, kavramı bilimsel ve yasal temelleri kadar felsefi temelleri ve projeksiyonları da olan bir konudur. Bu çalışmada farmakon teriminin içerisinde kavramların tarih öncesi dönemden başlayarak ne tür gelişim ve değişim gösterdiği edebiyattan örnekler verilerek açıklanacaktır

The term pharmacon has a mixed concept that means drug, poison and magic in ancient Greek. Drugs generally used for their therapeutic effect and, historically, has a positive connotation. However, all drugs have unwanted effects. These unwanted effects could be the side, advers or abused psychotropic effects. In mythology, scenes such as Cyclops’ sleep that is induced by wine and protection of Ulysses from Circe's wine, the psychotropic effects of natural substances paved the way through the development of magic concept of pharmacon. On the other hand, as Oliver Wendell Holmes stated, concerning the Materia Medica, “If all medicines in the world were thrown into the sea, it would be all the better for mankind and the worse for the fishes,” underlines the fact that drugs have also harmful effects. Nowadays, although the society focused on the therapeutic effects of the drugs, development of pharmacovigilance that deals with unwanted and harmful effects of the drugs put more emphasis to adverse effects of the drugs. Pharmacovigilance in a sense that “to become vigilant to harmful effects of the drugs” has not only scientific and regulatory but also philosophical projections and foundations. In this study, how the concepts that are found in the pharmacon term has changed and developed will be explained beginning from prehistorical era by giving examples from literature.
