A Study on the Quality of Mersin University School of Foreign Languages English Preparatory Classes’ Final Exam

The purpose of this study is to reveal the quality of the measurement instrument used asthe final exam which was implemented at Mersin University School of Foreign Languages at the endof 2002-2003 academic year considering its psychometric characteristics such as item difficultyindex, item discrimination index, and test reliability. The findings related to the item discriminationindex indicated that 4 items (0,11-0,20) used in the exam were very difficult, 11 items (0,24-0,36)were difficult, 25 items (0,41-0,59) were moderately difficult, 33 items (0,62-0,80) were easy, and 21items (0,82-0,95) are quite easy. The findings related to the item discrimination index indicated that22 items could not discriminate the students who acquired the intended behaviours and who did not.Besides, 49 items could discriminate the examinees who had the necessary knowledge for respondingto the items correctly. The reliability of the measurement instrument was found as 0,89. It can bestated that the measurement instrument is adequately reliable.
