The Role of Big Data in Reaching Smart City Ideal

Today, in parallel with rapid population growth, the population of people living in urban areas is increasing rapidly. Therefore, there is a growing need for environmental and human-focused urban systems, where cities can use resources more efficiently and take advantage of information and communication technologies more effectively. The concept of smart city offers systems that can pass on solutions based on the data to advanced technology. There are various requirements in reaching the ideal of smart city which is an important opportunity in today's information age and intense competition environment. The use of big data and related methods and technologies is at the top of these requirements. Cities generate data with high volume, velocity and variety that fits the definition of big data. Therefore, it is the theme of this paper to put forth big data and the role of the methods and technologies related to it in creating an efficient, sustainable and smart city. For this purpose, the concept of smart city, the concept of big data has been defined, followed by the methods and technologies that are used in relation to big data. Finally, in the literature, big data applications related to cities have been examined and it has been concluded that the handling of big data as a whole with its related methods and technologies will be more beneficial in terms of urban applications.
