INFLUENCE OF ALUMINA ADDITION ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF WINDOW GLASSES FOAMED WITH SODIUM SILICATE

In this study, the effect of alumina addition (1-40 wt. %) on the mechanical properties of window glass with 30 wt. % sodium silicate was investigated. Semi-wet mixtures were prepared and shaped and heated in the oven chamber at 800°C for 30 minutes. The microstructures of the glass foam material, densities, phase structures and mechanical strength were determined. Glass foam has a closed pore structure reduced by the amount of alumina addition (pore sizes: 0.5-1 mm) and the mechanical strength was increased up to 10.2 MPa. The foaming rate of the material is almost stayed stable up to 20% alumina incorporation. When the alumina content is 20% by weight, the mechanical strength of the sample is 7.1 MPa, the product has the density of 0.53 g/cm3, water absorption rate is about 1.4%. The high mechanical strength and adequate porosity (79.45%) of this product makes the material as potential to use in the building sector.
