Case Care of Twin Newborns Diagnosed with COVID-19: Nursing Process and Concept Map

COVID-19 has emerged as a highly contagious disease spreading rapidly and causing a pandemic worldwide. The risk factors in newborns include immaturity of the immune system, the possibility of vertical transition, the likelihood of perinatal contact through feces or urine during vaginal delivery, and close contact with the mother infected asymptomatically. It is very crucial to manage both treatment and care process in patients diagnosed with COVID-19. In successfully managing a COVID-19 case, neonatal intensive care nurses should provide optimal care by making use of critical thinking — also known as a scientific method of problem solving — in addition to the routine nursing process during the care for newborns. Neonatal intensive care nurses plan, implement and evaluate holistic care in COVID-19 as well. The use of concept maps, one of the critical thinking methods, together with the nursing process contributes to fully meeting the care needs. This case report summarizes the nursing diagnoses that can be addressed in the nursing care of premature neonates diagnosed with COVID-19 with a concept map. Any interventions and evaluations regarding each nursing diagnosis are also included. In the present case, the combination of nursing processes and concept map has proved useful to facilitate the planning of care by providing a holistic perspective in determining, satisfying and evaluating care needs.
