Catch composition, Gonadosomatic Index and Condition Factor of Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix L., 1766)

In this study, catch composition, sex ratio, gonadosomatic index and condition factor of bluefish caught by commercial fishers in the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, between September 2012 and August 2013, were investigated. A total of 672 bluefish individuals consisting of 353 females (52.53%) and 319 males (47.47%) were sampled throughout the study. The total length of bluefish samples varied from 12.9 cm to 26.3 cm and it was determined that individuals between the length range of 15-18 cm dominated the catch composition. The length-weight relationships for females, males, and for overall individuals were calculated as W = 0.0102TL2.983 (r = 0.977), W = 0.0105TL2.974 (r = 0.976) and W = 0.0104TL2.978 (r = 0.977), respectively. The value of exponential coefficient b, that indicates the body shape of fish depending on where it lives, was found less than 3 for females, males, and overall individuals, therefore a negative allometric growth was determined for both sexes and overall individuals. According to monthly variations in the mean GSI values, it was determined that the reproduction period of bluefish was determined to be between May and August. The mean condition factor was calculated as 0.976 ± 0.0139 for females, 0.971 ± 0.0137 for males and 0.973 ± 0.0136 for overall individuals, respectively. It was determined that 65.5% of the bluefish samples examined in this study were below the minimum landing size of 18 cm, which was specified in the communiqué on the regulation of commercial fisheries in Turkey.
