Determination of Otolith Mass Asymmetry in Capoeta banarescui Inhabiting Lower Melet River (Ordu, Turkey)

Although asymmetry causes significant effects on the vestibular and auditory functions of the fish, there are a limited number of studies on this subject. The aim of this study is to determine the otolith mass asymmetry and absolute otolith mass asymmetry of the Capoeta banarescui inhabiting the Lower Melet River which is also used as drinking water source in Ordu province. Total lengths of fish samples were measured, asteriscus otolith pairs were removed and weighed to the nearest 0.0001. Otolith mass symmetry (x), absolute otolith mass asymmetry (|x|) and otolith mass difference (MR-ML) values are calculated and than the relationships between total length and x, |x| and (MR-ML) were determined. The difference between right and left otolith weights of C. banarescui samples was not statistically significant compared to paired-t test (P>0.05). x and |x| mean values were calculated as -0.00803 and 0.0855, respectively. Total length-x, total length-|x| and total length-(MR-ML) relationships were y=0.0011x+0.0434; y=0.0066x+0.1457 and y=0.0000008x+0.00003, respectively.
